Description
Superb 19th century large oak revolving bookcase with drawer. English - Circa 1870. Colman's Mustard Family Provenance. Labelled.
Delivery is INCLUDED in the price for all areas in MAINLAND England & Wales. Delivery is restricted to ground and first floor unless there is a lift the item can fit in. There is an additional charge of £12 per floor for delivery above the first floor via the stairs.
The bookcase is of very good quality. A beautiful and unusual variation on the more ubiquitous slatted design, each side having fielded hand-carved panels of both linenfold and sinuous design. Sitting on patent metal roller castors. Made in solid oak throughout.
It is in very good condition, showing a few knocks to the edges in places with use. There is no woodworm. The top has a few small dent marks and slight differences in colour. The base shows a few indentation marks where the bookcase has been revolving. The bookcase has been cleaned and waxed.
The bookcase is heavy, weighing 60kg. The brass outer fitted castors are of a patent design, with metal rollers. These are original but they do not do much to help the movement of the bookcase due to its weight. The bookcase revolves well.
Provenance:
Clyffe House 'The Clyffe' Jeremiah & Caroline Colman. Coalman's Mustard.
Clyffe House was purchased by Jeremiah James Colman in 1869 as a second residence for his family. The house was enlarged in 1874 and Jeremiah and his son, Russell purchased more land in Corton, Blundeston, Flixton, Gunton, Hopton and Lound, most of which was bought from the Fowler family of Gunton Hall.
Jeremiah was also responsible for building the Methodist Chapel (1874), the Village Hall with the Bowling Green (1881), Anchor Cafe in The Street (now turned into houses), Almshouses and cottages for the people who worked on his estate. He also funded the building of the school.
Jeremiah spent £70,000 on a sea wall in the 1870s to try to prevent coastal erosion but this started to crumble in 1903 and by 1917 'The Clyffe' was in such a dangerous position that the contents of the house had to be sold and the house was partially demolished.
Finally, after the First World War, the estate and many of the houses were sold to East Suffolk County Council, to be divided into small holdings and farms for tenants who wanted to return to making their living from the land.
The Colmans are famous for their mustard which is produced in Norwich.
As the label, which is photographed, suggests, this bookcase was in the bedroom of Caroline Colman at Clyffe house, purchased from the estate sale by their daughter Helen Caroline Colman in 1917.
Additional dimensions information:
The base is 63cm wide. The bookshelves are 18cm deep. 23/24/27cm high.

Delivery is a two-man service. The drivers will be happy to carry the item to a room of your choice on ground or first floor, providing it is safe and accessible. There is an additional charge of £12 per floor for delivery above the first floor. We use a third party furniture courier. It is an ethical non-express service, and delivery usually takes place within 10-14 days, however this can be longer depending on area and our courier’s route plans. Please allow 25 days. Please remember this is an ethical service, and as such it will not increase its carbon footprint in order to reach you earlier. Deliveries are made between Monday and Friday. The courier will provide a delivery time slot in advance of delivery. All items are insured against damage/breakage whilst in transit. As with most couriers, the company we use covers different parts of the country on set days as part of well established routes, and while they will try to accommodate any time/day restrictions, a degree of flexibility on the customer’s part is necessary. Please contact us if you can only make certain days, to see if we can accommodate your requirements.
Items are well packed and boxed if needed before despatch.
A re-delivery fee will apply if you have confirmed a delivery timeslot, and upon arrival at the property no-one is available to take the item. The re-delivery fee will also apply if you confirm a delivery timeslot and cancel within 48 hours of the delivery day. Please remove any tripping hazards, furniture, ornaments or wall fixtures that will constrict the path. Please note that the drivers are not allowed to remove their shoes due to health and safety reasons. It is the recipient's responsibility to protect floors and carpets. It is illegal for the courier to stop on a red-route: please liaise with the courier company to make alternative arrangements if needed. Any damage done to any property needs to be reported to the delivery team at the time of delivery and noted on their POD tablet. If you are moving home or do not require the item for a while, we are more than happy to store it for up to 4 weeks at no extra cost. Please let us know.
We pride ourselves on good communication skills and good customer service.
Please check and make sure it will fit through all access points: regrettably we will have to charge a re-delivery fee if the courier has to return it to us, and when you are refunded, this will also be minus the original delivery cost. A return delivery charge will be £120.
Delivery is to mainland England and Wales only.
Mainland Scotland and Ireland will cost extra, please contact us for a delivery quote. This will be via a different furniture courier.

Last updated: 17th October 2024
Our Terms of sale were designed to treat both Customers and Vendors (including Professional Vendors and Non-Professional Vendors (as defined in the Site Terms)) fairly, in order to make the shopping/selling experience with Vinterior just as exceptional as the items.
To protect our Customers from disappointment or the unexpected, we strongly encourage them to closely inspect item photos, descriptions, and details before purchasing anything on the Site, and then again upon delivery or pickup.
If the Customer is unsure about an item's condition, dimensions, quantity, or description, they can send their questions to the item's Vendor by clicking on Ask the seller on the listing page of the Site.
Customers shall receive the same level of consumer protection on purchases irrespective of whether they are buying from a Professional Vendor or Non-Professional Vendor.
Should you have any questions regarding your transaction, please contact the Vendor in the first instance.
Can I cancel an order?
If a Customer changes their mind or decides for any other reason not to purchase the Goods before they have been dispatched, they can cancel the order on the Site and receive a refund.
The right to cancel does not apply to the following types of goods, which are non-refundable: items that are personalised, bespoke, or made-to-order according to the customer's specific requirements. If in doubt, the Customer can contact the Vendor via the Site.
If the Customer cancels an order after an item has already been marked as dispatched for delivery, the delivery costs are non-refundable.
To cancel the order, the Customer must follow the cancellation procedure on the Site by clicking on Create Cancellation on the order page.
Can I return an item?
At Vinterior, we understand that sometimes a piece may not be the perfect fit once it's in your home. That's why we offer a 14-day return policy, allowing you to return any item within 14 days from the date of delivery for any reason.
In the rare event that an item arrives damaged or defective, you have 30 days from the date of delivery to return it for a full refund or to have the issue fixed when possible.
Please note that certain items are non-refundable, including those that are personalised, bespoke, or made-to-order according to your specific requirements.
Types of returns and responsibilities
Change of mind return
Consumers can return the goods due to a change of mind. Once a return is requested, the buyer is in charge of shipping the goods back to the seller and should organise it as soon as possible. Shipment costs to and from buyers are non-refundable.
Item not fit for purpose
Acting under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, customers may return faulty Goods that are damaged or the listing on the Site is materially inaccurate, misleading, or misrepresents the Goods. In these cases, the Customer must provide photographic evidence to Vinterior and the Vendor or reject the delivery on arrival.
Damage in transit
Vinterior must be informed of any damage in transit. If Proovia delivered the items, Vinterior will then raise an insurance claim on behalf of the Vendor with the delivery company. If the seller organised a delivery, they would be asked to raise a claim with their courier. Once the claim is resolved and any relevant decision regarding the insurance has been made, any applicable refunds will be processed.
How to request a return
To initiate a return the customer needs to log in to their Vinterior account and click Create a return on the order page. In the return request, the reason for the return must be included along with photos of any damage of the Goods, if faulty.
How you will be refunded?
Once the item is returned to the Vendor in the same condition, the Vendor will confirm receipt of the item, and Vinterior will refund the original payment method.
If an item is returned to the seller damaged or in an unsuitable condition, Vinterior will not be able to process the refund, and the seller may have to send it back (and ask you to cover the delivery costs). All items are inspected on return.
What can't be returned?
As with cancellations, the right to return an item does not apply to the following types of Goods, which are non-refundable: items that are personalised, bespoke or made-to-order to the Customer's specific requirements.
Please note that vintage items are not sold as new and are likely to show signs of wear and tear. This is not sufficient grounds for a refund.
Vendors may refuse a return of an item if the Customer has altered it in any way.
Neither Vinterior nor the Vendors are liable for any damages or loss sustained in transit via third parties.
