Description
Sculpted steel coffee table by designer and sculptor Paul Evans (1931-1987) for Directional. USA 1967. Signed 'PE 67'.
Delivery is INCLUDED in the price for all areas in MAINLAND England & Wales. Free delivery is restricted to ground and first floor, unless there is a lift the item can fit in. There is an additional charge of £12 per floor for delivery above the first floor via the stairs.
Made of welded steel and polychrome, the table features artistic contrasting brazed brass decoration.
Paul Evans’ Brutalist-inspired sculpted metal furnishings distinguish him from others in the world of design. The sculptor is one of the most recognizable and versatile figures in the American Craft Movement of the post-war period, and arguably the most collectible American furniture designer of the late 20th Century.
The table is in very good condition, the 8mm glass top has been replaced at some point. This has a few very light surface marks.
Born New Jersey in 1931, Paul Evans exhibited talent for design at an early age. He studied woodworking in high school and briefly attended the Philadelphia Textile Institute. Evans was awarded the Aileen O. Webb Scholarship in 1950 and studied at the prestigious Rochester Institute of Technology’s School for American Craftsmen. He would continue his studies at Cranbrook in 1952 with a focus on metalwork. In 1953 he took a position as the metal craftsman at the living museum, Old Sturbridge Village. Feeling that his creativity was being stifled, Evans left the museum in 1955 to find a more stimulating environment. He opened a showroom with fellow designer Phillip Lloyd Powell and the two began a decade-long collaboration.
Evans’ experiments with welded and enamelled sculpture in the early 1960s caught the eye of the Directional furniture company. Directional was looking for handmade furniture with distinctive character and Evans’ new American craft designs were a perfect fit. In 1971, Evans developed the brass and chrome Cityscape line for Directional marking a departure from his earlier sculptural works. In the 1980s, working with his son Keith, an electrical engineer, he continued to experiment with new materials and design increasing minimal forms with kinetic elements. Together, they formed Zoom, Inc. in 1983 and began a relationship with the Design Institute of America. In 1987, just one day after his retirement, Evans suffered his third heart attack and died.
Evans is now internationally recognized as one of the great studio furniture makers of the 20th century. In his finest work, such as Argente and Sculpted Front, he deploys his training in welding, metallurgy, and jewellery design to sculpt brutal and beautiful furniture in metal—work that prefigured the art furniture movement today.

Delivery is a two-man service. The drivers will be happy to carry the item to a room of your choice on ground or first floor, providing it is safe and accessible. There is an additional charge of £12 per floor for delivery above the first floor. We use a third party furniture courier. It is an ethical non-express service, and delivery usually takes place within 10-14 days, however this can be longer depending on area and our courier’s route plans. Please allow 25 days. Please remember this is an ethical service, and as such it will not increase its carbon footprint in order to reach you earlier. Deliveries are made between Monday and Friday. The courier will provide a delivery time slot in advance of delivery. All items are insured against damage/breakage whilst in transit. As with most couriers, the company we use covers different parts of the country on set days as part of well established routes, and while they will try to accommodate any time/day restrictions, a degree of flexibility on the customer’s part is necessary. Please contact us if you can only make certain days, to see if we can accommodate your requirements.
Items are well packed and boxed if needed before despatch.
A re-delivery fee will apply if you have confirmed a delivery timeslot, and upon arrival at the property no-one is available to take the item. The re-delivery fee will also apply if you confirm a delivery timeslot and cancel within 48 hours of the delivery day. Please remove any tripping hazards, furniture, ornaments or wall fixtures that will constrict the path. Please note that the drivers are not allowed to remove their shoes due to health and safety reasons. It is the recipient's responsibility to protect floors and carpets. It is illegal for the courier to stop on a red-route: please liaise with the courier company to make alternative arrangements if needed. Any damage done to any property needs to be reported to the delivery team at the time of delivery and noted on their POD tablet. If you are moving home or do not require the item for a while, we are more than happy to store it for up to 4 weeks at no extra cost. Please let us know.
We pride ourselves on good communication skills and good customer service.
Please check and make sure it will fit through all access points: regrettably we will have to charge a re-delivery fee if the courier has to return it to us, and when you are refunded, this will also be minus the original delivery cost. A return delivery charge will be £120.
Delivery is to mainland England and Wales only.
Mainland Scotland and Ireland will cost extra, please contact us for a delivery quote. This will be via a different furniture courier.

Cancellations and Returns
Last updated: 17th October 2024
Our Terms of sale were designed to treat both Customers and Vendors (including Professional Vendors and Non-Professional Vendors (as defined in the Site Terms)) fairly, in order to make the shopping/selling experience with Vinterior just as exceptional as the items.
To protect our Customers from disappointment or the unexpected, we strongly encourage them to closely inspect item photos, descriptions, and details before purchasing anything on the Site, and then again upon delivery or pickup.
If the Customer is unsure about an item's condition, dimensions, quantity, or description, they can send their questions to the item's Vendor by clicking on Ask the seller on the listing page of the Site.
Customers shall receive the same level of consumer protection on purchases irrespective of whether they are buying from a Professional Vendor or Non-Professional Vendor.
Should you have any questions regarding your transaction, please contact the Vendor in the first instance.
Can I cancel an order?
If a Customer changes their mind or decides for any other reason not to purchase the Goods before they have been dispatched, they can cancel the order on the Site and receive a refund.
The right to cancel does not apply to the following types of goods, which are non-refundable: items that are personalised, bespoke, or made-to-order according to the customer's specific requirements. If in doubt, the Customer can contact the Vendor via the Site.
If the Customer cancels an order after an item has already been marked as dispatched for delivery, the delivery costs are non-refundable.
To cancel the order, the Customer must follow the cancellation procedure on the Site by clicking on Create Cancellation on the order page.
Can I return an item?
At Vinterior, we understand that sometimes a piece may not be the perfect fit once it's in your home. That's why we offer a 14-day return policy, allowing you to return any item within 14 days from the date of delivery for any reason.
In the rare event that an item arrives damaged or defective, you have 30 days from the date of delivery to return it for a full refund or to have the issue fixed when possible.
Please note that certain items are non-refundable, including those that are personalised, bespoke, or made-to-order according to your specific requirements.
Types of returns and responsibilities
Change of mind return
Consumers can return the goods due to a change of mind. Once a return is requested, the buyer is in charge of shipping the goods back to the seller and should organise it as soon as possible. Shipment costs to and from buyers are non-refundable.
Item not fit for purpose
Acting under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, customers may return faulty Goods that are damaged or the listing on the Site is materially inaccurate, misleading, or misrepresents the Goods. In these cases, the Customer must provide photographic evidence to Vinterior and the Vendor or reject the delivery on arrival.
Damage in transit
Vinterior must be informed of any damage in transit. If Proovia delivered the items, Vinterior will then raise an insurance claim on behalf of the Vendor with the delivery company. If the seller organised a delivery, they would be asked to raise a claim with their courier. Once the claim is resolved and any relevant decision regarding the insurance has been made, any applicable refunds will be processed.
How to request a return
To initiate a return the customer needs to log in to their Vinterior account and click Create a return on the order page. In the return request, the reason for the return must be included along with photos of any damage of the Goods, if faulty.
How you will be refunded?
Once the item is returned to the Vendor in the same condition, the Vendor will confirm receipt of the item, and Vinterior will refund the original payment method.
If an item is returned to the seller damaged or in an unsuitable condition, Vinterior will not be able to process the refund, and the seller may have to send it back (and ask you to cover the delivery costs). All items are inspected on return.
What can't be returned?
As with cancellations, the right to return an item does not apply to the following types of Goods, which are non-refundable: items that are personalised, bespoke or made-to-order to the Customer's specific requirements.
Please note that vintage items are not sold as new and are likely to show signs of wear and tear. This is not sufficient grounds for a refund.
Vendors may refuse a return of an item if the Customer has altered it in any way.
Neither Vinterior nor the Vendors are liable for any damages or loss sustained in transit via third parties.
