Available for sale from Big Sky Fine Art in the English county of Dorset, this original impasto oil painting is by the French artist Gaetan Dumas and dates from the 1930s.
The painting is presented and supplied in its original Montparnasse frame (which is shown in these photographs).
The frame and the canvas have both benefitted from cleaning and conservation, which was performed on our instruction, supervision and approval. A professional small repair to the canvas, performed when in previous ownership, is evident on the reverse. The repair is not visible from the front and is very stable and well done.
This vintage painting is in very good condition. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display.

Gaëtan Dumas was an accomplished French artist and poet. He was born in Marseille on 22 January 1879, and died in Bordeaux on 24 November 1950. He was known as a painter of portraits, nudes and still life works. His works are noted for a sensitivity and generosity of spirit. He was a member of the Salon des Tuileries, where he exhibited his work and also exhibited regularly at the Salons d’Automne. Posthumous retrospective exhibitions of his work were held by the Salon d’Automne in Paris in 1952 and again in 1960.
Today, examples of his work are held by the museums of Bordeaux, Courbevoie, Dijon, Marseille, Meudon, Paris (Petite-Palais) and Toulouse.
Dumas is the subject of a book published by Raymond Piquot in 1956, entitled “Gaëtan Dumas, Peintre et Poète, Carnets d’ Atelier”.

This is an excellent example of the work of French artist and poet Gaëtan Dumas, dating from the 1930s. It is signed by the artist in the upper right section.
This original impasto oil painting shows the expert hand of the artist in the confident pallet knife work, deep textures and rich colours. The image is of a young woman, in the prime of her beauty, seated, and nude. She is sitting on an unmade bed or couch, the colours of the rich crumpled fabric beneath her reflected back on her pale skin. Her eyes are cast downwards, to her right; she seems to be contemplating her situation. There is a quiet mystery in her composure which invites the viewer to speculate; is she reflecting on a night of passion? Is this a trace of pleasure, or regret?

Can I cancel an order?
There are many reasons why you might need to cancel an order, and you'll often be entitled to a refund. To cancel an order, click Create cancellation on the order page.
If you cancel your order before it has been dispatched, you will receive a full refund - including delivery costs. However, if your item has been shipped, delivery costs will not be included in your refund.

Can I return an order?

You can return your order if...
It isn't what you expected
If what arrives isn’t what you ordered, you can open a return. Just send us some photo evidence that the listing was inaccurate, misleading or misrepresented your purchased piece, and you’ll receive a refund.
You change your mind
If you don’t feel a piece is right for your space, you can return it. Once you request a change of mind return, you’ll be responsible for shipping the piece back to your seller as soon as possible. Delivery costs are non-refundable.
It's damaged in transit
In the rare event that an item arrives damaged or defective, you have a full 30 days from the date of delivery to return it for a full refund.
If your purchase arrives broken, always let us know. If Proovia delivered the piece, we can raise an insurance claim on the seller’s behalf. Or, the seller can raise a claim with their chosen courier.
What can't I return?
Just as there are some orders you can’t cancel, there are some you cant return, too. Personalised, bespoke or made-to-order pieces are non-returnable, and non-refundable. Sellers may also reject your return if the item has been altered in any way.
Please note: pieces on our site are pre-loved, not new. They may show some wear and tear; this is not sufficient grounds for a refund, unless the seller has misrepresented the item’s condition.

How will I receive my refund?
Once the seller confirms they’ve received the item (in the same condition it was sent), we will send your refund to your original payment method.
All items are inspected on return. If the seller receives the return with damage they don’t recognise, we will not be able to process your refund and the seller may need to send the piece back to you. You will be required to cover these delivery costs.
