Description
This wonderful antique dining set comprises a Pembroke dining table which is unmistakable in sophistication and style dating from the Regency period, circa 1820, and attributed to Gillows, the famous furniture makers mentioned by the likes of Jane Austen and Thackeray in their works, with a set of 6 antique Regency mahogany dining chairs in the manner of Gillows, also C1820 in date.This antique dining table has been hand-crafted from solid mahogany which was the wood of choice for fine furniture makers due to its durability and also its beautiful grain which provides a lovely colour and patina.
Above an end frieze drawer, the table has twin rounded flaps creating a rectangular top. The table top is crossbanded around the edge which provides stylish and subtle decoration. This antique dining table is raised on four fluted uprights on a quadripartite base which features ornate brass caps and castors.
It was originally purchased from Messrs Christies Auctioneers in the Mere Hall auction on 23rd May 1994 as lot 56.
The set of six Regency mahogany dining chairs are in the manner of Gillows, and circa 1820 in date. They have cresting rails beautifully carved with scrolling leaf motifs, lyre pattern design. The seats are upholstered in distressed light brown leather, the elegant tapered legs are turned & reeded.

When this antique dining table is open it has a height of 44 cm (1 foot, 9 inches), a length of 118 cm (3 feet, 10 inches) and a depth of 100 cm (3 feet, 3 inches). When closed it has the same height and depth dimensions but the width is a very compact 56 cm (1 foot, 10 inches).

Origin of 'Pembroke' TablesThe name 'Pembroke Table' is highly debated, but it's believed to be named after Mary Herbert, the Countess of Pembroke (1561-1621) who was the first person to order a folding flap table design. They were first introduced as a type of table in the 18th century and remained popular throughout the 19th century due to their flexibility.
They are characterised by having an oval or rectangular top with folding or drop leaves on each side. Most examples have four legs which are sometimes connected by stretchers and also have one or more drawers in the frieze. This design means they can be easily stored and moved about and opened for dining, serving tea or writing.
GillowsGillows & Co, based in Lancaster with a later shop in London, were furniture makers whose name became a byword for quality. The firm was started in about 1730 by Robert Gillow who was joined in business by his son Richard Gillow in 1754. They are noted for their use of mahogany wood, which they were able to import directly from the Americas through owning a twelfth share in the trading ship Bridget. The success of the firm was partly based on this fact. They set up a London branch in 1760 and a London shop in 1770 and went on to win commissions to furnish and decorate public buildings across the world as well as for British aristocratic houses such as Tatton Hall. Pieces from Gillows can now be seen in museums in London, Leeds, Adelaide, Melbourne and Auckland as well as in their own Gillows Museum in Lancaster.

However, sometimes things don’t go exactly to plan, and you may need to cancel or return an order.

Can I cancel an order?
There are many reasons why you might need to cancel an order, and you'll often be entitled to a refund. To cancel an order, click Create cancellation on the order page.
If you cancel your order before it has been dispatched, you will receive a full refund - including delivery costs. However, if your item has been shipped, delivery costs will not be included in your refund.
Please note: orders of bespoke, personalised or made-to-order pieces cannot be cancelled.

You can return your order if...
It isn't what you expected
If what arrives isn’t what you ordered, you can open a return. Just send us some photo evidence that the listing was inaccurate, misleading or misrepresented your purchased piece, and you’ll receive a refund.
You change your mind
If you don’t feel a piece is right for your space, you can return it. Once you request a change of mind return, you’ll be responsible for shipping the piece back to your seller as soon as possible. Delivery costs are non-refundable.
It's damaged in transit
In the rare event that an item arrives damaged or defective, you have a full 30 days from the date of delivery to return it for a full refund.
If your purchase arrives broken, always let us know. If Proovia delivered the piece, we can raise an insurance claim on the seller’s behalf. Or, the seller can raise a claim with their chosen courier.
What can't I return?
Just as there are some orders you can’t cancel, there are some you cant return, too. Personalised, bespoke or made-to-order pieces are non-returnable, and non-refundable. Sellers may also reject your return if the item has been altered in any way.
Please note: pieces on our site are pre-loved, not new. They may show some wear and tear; this is not sufficient grounds for a refund, unless the seller has misrepresented the item’s condition.
Lastly, neither Vinterior nor our sellers are liable for any damages or loss sustained in transit via third parties.

To initiate a return, log into your Vinterior account, then go to the relevant order page and click Create a return. In the return request, be sure to include all the details: the reason for your return, an in-depth description, and photos of any issues or damage.
How will I receive my refund?
Once the seller confirms they’ve received the item (in the same condition it was sent), we will send your refund to your original payment method.
All items are inspected on return. If the seller receives the return with damage they don’t recognise, we will not be able to process your refund and the seller may need to send the piece back to you. You will be required to cover these delivery costs.
