Description

Antique Neoclassical wall mirror, rectangular, brass shells & bleeding hearts in the manner of Keswick School of Industrial Arts, 1920`s ca, English.

This antique mirror has been gently cleaned while preserving the aged patina. It is ready to hang.

While this mirror is unmarked, it could be the work of the Keswick School of Industrial Arts because of the style & handmade features. It exemplifies the ideals & techniques of the Arts & Crafts Movement: the frame covered with embossed & hammered brass.

With applied Neoclassical decoration this mirror is strongly influenced by the Arts & Crafts Movement but kept modern with its minimal form. It would sit elegantly over a mantle, sideboard, chest of drawers, in a cloakroom, or by the front door. It would suit a range of interiors such as Arts & Crafts, Art Deco, Hollywood Regency, Traditional, Country or Contemporary.

The brass frame has the warm original antique patina preserved including an attractive natural verdigris patina developed over the years. It has interesting & unique decorations, a combination of handmade & early machine made features. There is an embossed foliate decoration of sea shells & bleeding hearts creating depth & texture. In Art, the heart-shaped flowers of the Bleeding Heart represent strong and unconditional love.

The frontal background has the traditional hammered effect. The outer edges of the frame are trimmed with a pressed rope-like pattern. The external brass trim is flat & simple, emphasizing the rectangular shape with an embossed "snake skin" effect decoration.

The brass sheet continues along the sides to the backside. On the reverse there is the original antique wood backplate.

The quality thick silver mirror insert is original to the piece and securely held in place behind the frame. It is fully reflective with a bevelled edge which adds a sense of depth.

To hang the mirror on the wall there is a new brass metal chain which is attached to the two original antique metal plates, each screwed to the back wooden plate. This mirror is set up at present to hang portrait, but the plates could be unscrewed & moved if preferred to hang horizontal.

This antique wall mirror is in very good condition for its age. The antique patina has been preserved on the brass. The brass frame is sound with no missing parts or cracks. The brass surfaces have the original clear lacquer present & an attractive warm patina & verdigris developed over the years adding character, with minor rubbing & superficial marks. The original antique mirror surface is in good condition, it is very reflective with some uniform light foxing in areas but no cracks or chips, minimal superficial marks and a few tiny black dots of foxing, all in line with age & wear and as expected for an antique piece.

Additional dimensions:

ARTS & CRAFTS MOVEMENT IN BRITAIN HISTORY

The Arts & Craft Movement took its name from the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, a group founded in London in 1887.

The late 19th Century marked the beginning of a change in the value society placed on how things were made. This was a reaction to not only the damaging effects of industrialization but also the relatively low status of the decorative arts. Arts and Crafts reformed the design and manufacture of everything from buildings to jewellery. The Arts and Crafts leaders wanted to develop products that not only had more integrity but which were also made in a less `dehumanising` way.

The movement was influenced by art critic John Ruskin (1819-1900), whose work had suggested a link between a nation`s social health and the way in which its goods were produced. Ruskin expressed: "Fine art is that in which the hand, the head, and the heart of man go together".

The Keswick School of Industrial Art (KSIA) was founded in 1884 by Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley and his wife Edith as an evening class in woodwork and repoussé metalwork at the Crosthwaite Parish Rooms, in Keswick, Cumbria. The enterprise, designed to alleviate unemployment, prospered, and within ten years more than a hundred men were attending classes. A new building was erected for the school at a nearby site. The school closed in 1984.

Seller Reviews

    Cancellations and Returns

    Last updated: 24th March 2025

We want everybody’s Vinterior experience to be seamless, so both buyers and sellers can fall in love with pre-loved. We designed our Terms of sale to treat everybody fairly.

However, sometimes things don’t go exactly to plan, and you may need to cancel or return an order.

To prevent this, we encourage you to check listings, photos and descriptions carefully before you buy. If you aren’t sure about a piece’s condition, size, provenance or shipping, just ask; click Contact seller to get in touch. Always contact your seller first if you have any queries, at any point in your purchase.

Our buyers receive the same protection when buying from all our sellers, both professional and verified.

    Can I cancel an order?

There are many reasons why you might need to cancel an order, and you'll often be entitled to a refund. To cancel an order, click Create cancellation on the order page.

If you cancel your order before it has been dispatched, you will receive a full refund - including delivery costs. However, if your item has been shipped, delivery costs will not be included in your refund.

Please note: orders of bespoke, personalised or made-to-order pieces cannot be cancelled.

    Can I return an order?

We understand that sometimes a piece isn’t the perfect fit. So if you no longer want your order, our returns process will ensure it finds a new home fast.

The Vinterior Guarantee included with your purchase entitles you to 14-day returns - allowing you to return any item within 14 days of the delivery date (except in specific circumstances, detailed below).

You can return your order if...

    It isn't what you expected

If what arrives isn’t what you ordered, you can open a return. Just send us some photo evidence that the listing was inaccurate, misleading or misrepresented your purchased piece, and you’ll receive a refund.

    You change your mind

If you don’t feel a piece is right for your space, you can return it. Once you request a change of mind return, you’ll be responsible for shipping the piece back to your seller as soon as possible. Delivery costs are non-refundable.

    It's damaged in transit

In the rare event that an item arrives damaged or defective, you have a full 30 days from the date of delivery to return it for a full refund.

If your purchase arrives broken, always let us know. If Proovia delivered the piece, we can raise an insurance claim on the seller’s behalf. Or, the seller can raise a claim with their chosen courier.

    What can't I return?

Just as there are some orders you can’t cancel, there are some you cant return, too. Personalised, bespoke or made-to-order pieces are non-returnable, and non-refundable. Sellers may also reject your return if the item has been altered in any way.

Please note: pieces on our site are pre-loved, not new. They may show some wear and tear; this is not sufficient grounds for a refund, unless the seller has misrepresented the item’s condition.

Lastly, neither Vinterior nor our sellers are liable for any damages or loss sustained in transit via third parties.

I'm eligible for a return. Now what?

To initiate a return, log into your Vinterior account, then go to the relevant order page and click Create a return. In the return request, be sure to include all the details: the reason for your return, an in-depth description, and photos of any issues or damage.

How will I receive my refund?

Once the seller confirms they’ve received the item (in the same condition it was sent), we will send your refund to your original payment method.

All items are inspected on return. If the seller receives the return with damage they don’t recognise, we will not be able to process your refund and the seller may need to send the piece back to you. You will be required to cover these delivery costs.
