Description
Antique pair Aesthetic Movement swing arm wall lights sconces, Fleur de Lis foliate decoration, in gilt bronze, 1900`s ca, French.
These antique wall lights have been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. They are newly rewired & earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to install. Each has the following new components: gold tone cable, E14 Candle lamp holders with card covers, and two clip-on lampshades. Lightbulbs included. These lights can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use these sconces in other countries although it may be necessary to purchase different light bulbs suitable to local electricity.
This sconces were made in the Aesthetic Movement style which flourished in England & France between 1860-1900. The sophisticated design was intended to bring beauty to everyday objects, escaping the ugliness & materialism of the Industrial Age. The contrast between traditional & geometric motifs, make these sconces a good example of The Aesthetic Movement Style.
Both sconces are stamped "DEP" (meaning "modele depose" in French, as "Registered Design" in English) on the round portion of each vertical peg that attaches to each arm.
Aesthetic artists drew inspiration from various cultures & periods, in this example from ancient France with the decorative Fleur de Lis foliate pattern on the brass. The Fleur - de - Lis (in French: "Lily flower"), also spelled fleur - de - lys or flower - de - luce, is an stylised lily or iris flower emblem much used in ornamentation, particularly in heraldry, long associated with the French crown and typically representing royalty or someone of great power or connections. This rich eclecticism is one of the Aesthetic Movement`s most intriguing characteristics making this sconces well suited for Interiors today.
With its delicate proportions and swing arms they would sit sweetly either side of a mantle, bed, above a sideboard, chest of drawers, in a cloakroom, or by the front door. The decorative design combined with the use of golden metal, make this lights well suited for a range of interiors such as Art Deco, Antique, Hollywood Regency, Traditional, Country and Contemporary.
The design of each sconce consists of a single pivot swinging arm attached to a round backplate, both quality cast in gilt bronze. The arms are removable, a vertical tubular finial/peg sits on a ring located on the base. The back portion of each ring has two tiny pegs stopping the rotation of the arm at the same angle from the base. The frame elongated arms have a pierced scrolling foliate pattern finishing at the top with a stylised Fleur de Lis decoration. This form creates a sense of movement and lightness. At the end of each arm there is a round bobeche drip pan & an octagonal candle sconce for the lightbulb. This geometric contrasting shapes (traditional & modern) are typical of the Aesthetic Movement Style. The new candle lampholders are covered with new cream card covers.
The foliate decoration continues under the bobeche with a decorative finial unifying the design.
Each wall light carries 1 standard small screw light bulbs (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present these lights are fitted & photographed with Candle clear shaped light bulbs of 25 Watts. These are included in the price. It would be possible to use other (E14) Candle light bulbs.
Each sconce is finished with a new clip-on black silk lampshade lined metallic gold. This complements the tones of the base.
It would also be possible to display without the shades for a more traditional look.
To fit these sconces to the wall there are two holes on the round backplate.
Both sconces are in very good condition for their age. The fabulous antique patina has been preserved on the metal adding character. The frames are sound with no damage. The gilt finish is in good condition, with minor marks & rubbing in line with age & wear. The 2 lampshades are new and in very good condition.

AESTHETIC MOVEMENT HISTORY
The Aesthetic Movement originated in Britain, covered the period of 1860 to 1900. Artists designed to escape the Industrial Revolution Age, by concentrating instead on producing art that was beautiful rather than having a deeper meaning: `Art for Art`s sake`. These new bohemian Aesthetic artists included Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, Christopher Dresser & Frederic Leighton.
In France it was also called "The Decadent Movement". The term “decadence” often referring to a prolonged state of cultural, societal & moral decline, describing a set of anti Romantic approaches that diminished the natural and moral encouraging the unnatural, the grotesque, and the taboo.
The Aesthetic Movement initiated extensive artistic & design changes. Its eclecticism, modern concepts of middle-class lifestyle and domestic environment prepared the way for the art movements of the 20th century, resonating even into our own time.

Cancellations and Returns
Last updated: 24th March 2025
We want everybody’s Vinterior experience to be seamless, so both buyers and sellers can fall in love with pre-loved. We designed our Terms of sale to treat everybody fairly.
However, sometimes things don’t go exactly to plan, and you may need to cancel or return an order.
To prevent this, we encourage you to check listings, photos and descriptions carefully before you buy. If you aren’t sure about a piece’s condition, size, provenance or shipping, just ask; click Contact seller to get in touch. Always contact your seller first if you have any queries, at any point in your purchase.
Our buyers receive the same protection when buying from all our sellers, both professional and verified.
Can I cancel an order?
There are many reasons why you might need to cancel an order, and you'll often be entitled to a refund. To cancel an order, click Create cancellation on the order page.
If you cancel your order before it has been dispatched, you will receive a full refund - including delivery costs. However, if your item has been shipped, delivery costs will not be included in your refund.
Please note: orders of bespoke, personalised or made-to-order pieces cannot be cancelled.
Can I return an order?
We understand that sometimes a piece isn’t the perfect fit. So if you no longer want your order, our returns process will ensure it finds a new home fast.
The Vinterior Guarantee included with your purchase entitles you to 14-day returns - allowing you to return any item within 14 days of the delivery date (except in specific circumstances, detailed below).
You can return your order if...
It isn't what you expected
If what arrives isn’t what you ordered, you can open a return. Just send us some photo evidence that the listing was inaccurate, misleading or misrepresented your purchased piece, and you’ll receive a refund.
You change your mind
If you don’t feel a piece is right for your space, you can return it. Once you request a change of mind return, you’ll be responsible for shipping the piece back to your seller as soon as possible. Delivery costs are non-refundable.
It's damaged in transit
In the rare event that an item arrives damaged or defective, you have a full 30 days from the date of delivery to return it for a full refund.
If your purchase arrives broken, always let us know. If Proovia delivered the piece, we can raise an insurance claim on the seller’s behalf. Or, the seller can raise a claim with their chosen courier.
What can't I return?
Just as there are some orders you can’t cancel, there are some you cant return, too. Personalised, bespoke or made-to-order pieces are non-returnable, and non-refundable. Sellers may also reject your return if the item has been altered in any way.
Please note: pieces on our site are pre-loved, not new. They may show some wear and tear; this is not sufficient grounds for a refund, unless the seller has misrepresented the item’s condition.
Lastly, neither Vinterior nor our sellers are liable for any damages or loss sustained in transit via third parties.
I'm eligible for a return. Now what?
To initiate a return, log into your Vinterior account, then go to the relevant order page and click Create a return. In the return request, be sure to include all the details: the reason for your return, an in-depth description, and photos of any issues or damage.
How will I receive my refund?
Once the seller confirms they’ve received the item (in the same condition it was sent), we will send your refund to your original payment method.
All items are inspected on return. If the seller receives the return with damage they don’t recognise, we will not be able to process your refund and the seller may need to send the piece back to you. You will be required to cover these delivery costs.
